Two SnapChat accounts that show how it’s done

I have been trying to get more accustomed with SnapChat, and have found two accounts that really show how it should be done.

Jill Walker Rettberg is professor of digital culture at the University of Bergen in Norway. She researches SnapChat and has made great discoveries along the way.

John Stanmeyer is a photographer who also works for National geographic. His son told him about SnapChat and the power of narratives and storytelling. It really is a treat following his Snaps each day!

Can you suggest more accounts worth following that uses the distinct features of the platform to it’s full potential?

Liewe Heksie, a book character that’s timeless in the Afrikaans language

Liewe Heksie, Verna Vels, Afrikaans language, books, children,

Liewe Heksie, by Verna Vels

It is so nice to have your own kid discover the book characters that you loved as a child!

Liewe Heksie is a good witch who always forgets her words and magic, but she always manages to save the day in the end! By accident, but that makes her so much more special!

Little Miss, the 7-year old has started reading Liewe Heksie!

Who is one of your favourite characters from your early reading adventures?

Skype with my ILN peer mentor – definitely worth it!

Interlibnet Skype ivd

My ILN peer mentor for this round is Anja Jerse, a librarian at the academic library of the Faculty of Theology at University of Ljubljana (Slovenia).

We organized a Skype call a while back, and it was most insightful! I learnt more from her in this 45 minute call than all of our email exchanges previously! It was great to hear how a librarian in another country is living and working. I was also amazed that they only get a job with a Masters degree, but it doesn’t include a honors degree which we have to get here  before  the Masters.

I will definitely be doing Skype calls in the next rounds as well!

Recognition of the work done by Archives #Vine

It is always a great to hear when there is recognition for the work that we do in the Archives. It is a behind-the-scenes job, which always have us motivating the hours and work that we do here!

Translation of the audio clip featured here: Margot Luyt, announcer at SABC Radio Sonder Grense radio station says: “…what luxury we have in archives! If it were not for the Sound Archives…” she would not have been able to play the voice of the original poet introducing the musical composition of his own poem being played!

Yes, what a luxury and a treasure!

UCT Social Media Online Short Course #blogjune

GetSmarter Social Media Short Course

UCT Social Media Online Short Course

I have been doing the UCT Social Media Online Short Course from GetSmarter from April 2016 this year. It is a nine week online course, with assessments that have to be completed each week. I have already submitted Assignment 7 this week.

It has been a tough course, but also a very worthwhile course to me. I thought a knew a lot, but I have been taught much more that I’ve missed in my own journey on social media!

I have been asking for years to do this course, and I could finally do it this year! I was subscribed a week late, but luckily I could still catch up!

The topics that’s been covered:

Module 1: Positioning your brand on social media

Get introduced to social media, look at how it has evolved, the various platforms that exist, and the most popular tools in use.

Module 2: Managing and growing your Facebook community

Learn how to use Facebook business pages and the new Timeline effectively, measure user engagement, and craft effective content.

Module 3: Building a following on Twitter

Learn how to leverage Twitter for both business-to-business and business-to-consumer relationship building.

Module 4: Leveraging LinkedIn and Google+

Explore the various ways in which LinkedIn and Google+ can be used for business and individual gain and business-to-business marketing.

Module 5: Pinterest and social bookmarking

Learn how to create a lifestyle around a brand.

Module 6: Using Youtube, Instagram and understanding mobile

Get introduced to multimedia and mobile marketing.

Module 7: Blogging for community engagement and search

Discover the various content management systems and blogging platforms available.

Module 8: Managing and measuring your online reputation

Learn about crowdsourcing and using social media for market research.

Module 9: Intergrating social media into your marketing strategy

Learn about strategy and marketing integration – the most important aspects of utilising social media for marketing.

I can really recommend this or any other social media course for extra “enlightenment”. It’s tough to keep up with all the continuous changes on social media!
